Title

United Cooperative Society Stock Certificate

Description

A stock certificate, number 13860, for 1 share of UCS stock issued to Arne Leino in 1953.

A brief biography of Arne by his niece, Karina Leino Thompson:

The certificate was owned by my uncle Arne Leino. He was born in 1916 and died in 1981. He never married. His father was Johannes Seven Karlsson (1886-1963). Johannes (my grandfather) changed his name from Karlsson to Leino when he emigrated through Ellis Island - because, according to family lore, Leino was a more Finnish name than Karlsson.

Arne's mother was Ida Junnikala (died in April, 1918 when Arne was two years old and just after the birth of his brother Marti in March, 1918). His parents were Finnish immigrants, ultimately settling on a farm in Harrison, Maine. This farm is still owned by the family. Arne and Marti (with their sister Helmi) were raised by my grandfather and his second wife, Hilda Kohtakangas (another Finnish immigrant by way of Canada). They had eleven more children.

Arne worked primarily as a forestry laborer. After his service in WWII, he traveled around various parts of New England working in the woods, felling trees for the wood industry. He lived in the Maynard in the mid-1950s, and also, I believe, in Littleton. He would visit his sister, my aunt Eila (Leino) Makey who married a second generation Finnish man from Stow -John Makey. John Makey was road commissioner in Stow for many years and involved with the Stow Historical Society.

A heavy smoker, my uncle Arne developed lung cancer, and died at the VA hospital in West Roxbury in 1981. He Is buried in the Lutheran/Finnish cemetery in Harrison, Maine.
