Title

Bonfire Stack - July 4, 1916

Description

A postcard with a photo of the bonfire stack, presumably on Summer Hill**, which was part of Maynard's Fourth of July festivities in 1916. It is important to remember that this was happening just prior to the United States involvement in World War I and patriotism was running high (pretty much everywhere: for example, South Acton was equally geared up for an elaborate day's worth of events).

** The organizing committee thanked Hans Erickson and the American Woolen Company for the use of their land for the bonfire.

We've attached some newspaper clips from before and after the 4th to provide some idea of what was happening in Maynard for that day.

$649.75 was raised for the day's events, including special donations of badges, sashes and a loving cup were also received.

The expenses amounted to $625.97 and provide an insight into the day's events:

Maynard brass band, concert and parade ... 72.00
Maynard fife and drum corps, two parades ... 25.00
Prizes for parade ... 115.00
Printing ... 19.15
Vaudeville concert, including cartage, rent and repair of piano ... 39.45
Cigars for workmen and militia ... 5.50
Bonfire, labor and cartage ... 81.12
Fireworks ... 250.00
Fireworks incidentals, red fire, labor, lumber and cartage ... 18.75
Total ... $625.97
